ABSTRACT

An Oxford Economics report commissioned by the British Hospitality Association (BHA) has identifi ed that 2.44 million jobs are directly related to the Hospitality and Tourism industry and a further 1.2 million through the multiplier effects. This represents 1 in 13 jobs or just under 8% of total employment making the industry the fi fth largest employer in the UK. The core hospitality economy has an estimated turnover of £90bn, and is worth £46bn in Gross Value Added (wages and profi ts). Scenarios for growth in the sector show that the contribution of the direct hospitality economy could rise to 2.76 million jobs by 2015 – 320,000 net additional jobs more than 2010 (Oxford Economics, British Hospitality Trends and Developments 2010).
