ABSTRACT

In the 1950s, quality was viewed as the process of inspecting products that had already been produced in order to separate the good ones from the bad (defective or sub-par). But in the current business environment, so the thinking goes, you have to prevent defects and failures rather than inspect for them; i.e., you cannot make it right by inspection. You have to focus on processes to ensure things are done right the fi rst time, every time, and on a culture where everybody is qualityfocused.
