ABSTRACT

Calcicoles such as bird cherry and clematis have adapted to the calcium-rich soils (high pH) which can be seen at the base of limestone or chalk hills. The thin soils of the chalk downland often feature yellow wort, restharrow, hairy violet, horseshoe vetch and hoary plantain, whereas in the grasslands of the limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales can be found rock-rose, wild thyme, globe fl ower and bloody cranesbill not seen on the more southern hills.
