ABSTRACT
World War One dominates the public perception of twentieth-century conflict to a disproportionate extent, and the impression created focuses on the heavy casualties of the war on the Western Front in France and Belgium and the impasse of trench warfare. This underrates the extent to which the war ended with victory, the total defeat in 1918 of Germany and its allies by Britain, France, the USA and their allies. Given the difficulties of applying strength effectively, this was a more impressive outcome than is generally appreciated.
