ABSTRACT
In an earlier part of this inquiry (Chapter Two) the views on the morality of adolescents by groups of adults in positions of authority were analysed. Among the questions they were asked was one concerning the moral qualities they thought should be encouraged among young people. A good deal of the subsequent research with the young workers has helped to throw light on their moral values, dilemmas, and on the focuses of their moral concern. Much of this has been elicited by indirect approaches including projection tests. At one point, however, a direct question was asked about what they would consider to be ‘good’ behaviour for people of their age, and who would be likely to approve of the actions mentioned. The responses to this question therefore provide a direct opportunity for contrasting the adult with the adolescent view on this issue, and also on the issue of the major sanctions for morality on which the adults had provided a good deal of material.
