ABSTRACT

Al-Mawardi was a great jurist, sociologist and an expert in political science. He was a jurist in the school of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and his book On the Ordinances of Government is held in high regard to this day. It has long been recognised as a classic in its field, much discussed by Arab authors and orientalists, as well as being quoted in courses on Islamic law and government. He wrote on many subjects, including Qur’anic interpretation, religion, government, public and constitutional law, language and ethics.
