ABSTRACT

Popular accounts from all over the world have promoted stories of natural leaders, who succeeded without evidence of formal training, in business, politics, education, sport, and many other walks of life. Yet, leadership training and development has become a growth industry, and can also be found in all these spheres of activity, evidence of a widely held assumption that large numbers of people can be helped to achieve success in leadership positions. In everyday terms, these suggest a dilemma which may be posed as the question, ‘Are leaders “born” or “made”?’ In this chapter we investigate the maps of leadership for deeper understanding of such dilemmas involving the identification and development of leadership.
