ABSTRACT
The city is both an environmental and a social construct. It is predicated upon ecological processes, indeed it is a complex ecological system in its own right, yet it is also a social artifact that embodies and reflects power relations and social differences. The city is at the center of a social-environment dialectic that connects the environmental and the political. In this chapter we will explore how issues of class, race and gender interconnect with environmental issues.
