His career then suffered two set-backs. In March 1993, he left the ministry again after the Socialists’ electoral disaster. The following December, he lost the parliamentary seat he had regained in March, for exceeding campaign costs. In 1994, he became a Euro MP and in 1995 stood briefly for the Socialist nomination for the presidency, but withdrew in favour of Lionel Jospin.
