ABSTRACT

Magazines also fulfil the basic news function assumed in many countries largely by dailies and Sunday newspapers. (There is only one Sunday paper of note, Le Journal du dimanche.) Paris-based weekly news magazines such as L’Express, Le Nouvel Observateur, Le Point and L’Événement du jeudi provide wideranging news coverage and commentary, and are often regarded as another reason for the poor circulation figures of daily newspapers. In 1995, L’Express and Le Nouvel Observateur both exceeded the sales of any national daily. For busy people who have little time to read a paper, and who are used to the high-quality images seen on television news each evening, the news magazine has the advantage of providing a synthesis of the most important events of the week, together with considered analyses and good-quality photography, all in a convenient format.
