ABSTRACT

The author of some fifteen novels, which typically dissect women’s identity and situation in realist mode and are often set in provincial France, Perrein trained and worked as a journalist. Literature became her full-time career after the success (in 1970) of her eighth novel La Chineuse (The Tease), an exploration, in fictional form, of sex/gender difference set in southeast Asia. The winner of various literary prizes-including the Prix Interallé, awarded in 1984 for Les Cotonniers de Bassalane (The Cotton Plants of Bassalane)—she has also written plays and feminist essays.
