ABSTRACT

There are times when activity is tedious. Peter Ustinov, directing a movie, became so exasperated by the over-activity of an infuriating method actor that he eventually cried, ‘Don’t just do something. Stand there!’. But the school’s approach to health and safety cannot be passive: it must be proactive. The school should never put itself in a position where someone could fairly say that an accident was one of those that was ‘waiting to happen’. It must seek out and counter-balance potential dangers. It should also be borne in mind that the area of health and safety is particularly complicated.
