ABSTRACT
In the idyllic world of Tom Sawyer, playing hookey was a harmless habit providing opportunities for adventure and for finding out what real life was all about. Outside the realms of fiction poor attendance represents a corrosive influence on standards which schools and others have to tackle vigorously.
