ABSTRACT

Although the spiritual, the moral, the social and the cultural have each come under scrutiny from humorists over the years, the concentration has been on the spiritual and the moral. For example, in the spiritual sphere, Ambrose Bierce defined heaven as a place where the wicked cease from troubling you with their personal affairs and the good listen with attention while you expound your own. Of morality, the writer and satirist Hector Munro – ‘Saki’ – commented, ‘In my day men were content with ten commandments and one wife. Now the situation is reversed’.
