ABSTRACT

There are two main senses in which we can ask for an explanation of art and of aesthetic enjoyment. We can ask for an account of their purpose; or we can ask for an account of the activities themselves that are here being enjoyed. These two questions are interwoven, of course. In general it is impossible to say what the purpose of an activity might be without first being able to describe the activity itself; and a full and accurate account of an activity ought to lead to an account of its purpose, if it has one.
