ABSTRACT
Netta Syrett (c.1867-1943), novelist, short-story writer, children’s author and playwright, she was one of a family of five independent sisters, all of whom shared a flat in London. She taught for a time before a meeting with Aubrey Beardsley’s sister Mabel led her to membership of the Yellow Book circle. The first of her more than thirty novels was Nobody’s Fault (1896), followed by The Tree of Life (1897), Roseanne (1902), Women and Circumstance (1906) and The Child of Promise (1907), which is considered her best. Her last novel was Gemini (1940). She also wrote stories and plays for children, and edited fairy tales, including The Garden of Delight, illustrated by her sister Nellie (1898). She also published books on history, and wrote plays for adults. The Sheltering Tree (1939) contains her reminiscences of the Yellow Book period.
