ABSTRACT
A structure may be considered to be an assembly of elements and these elements can be one, two or three dimensional. Depending on whether the loading is lateral or axial, each element has a particular type of structural behaviour (see Chapter 3). This behaviour may also be affected by the slenderness of parts of the structures that are axially loaded, as this can lead to instability (see Section 6.4).
