ABSTRACT
Buildings are constructed to alter the environment locally by enclosing space and building structures give strength and stiffness to the enclosing elements. The simplest building is a single enclosed space or a single space building. If the function and behaviour of the structure of a single space building is understood then understanding building structures of more complex buildings is relatively straightforward. Although many buildings have many spaces, factories, sports halls, theatres and churches are all examples of buildings which are often essentially a single space.
