ABSTRACT
Huineng, known as the Sixth Patriarch, is generally acclaimed as the most influential exponent of Chan Buddhism in China. Chan is widely known in the West by its Japanese name, Zen. The term derives from the Sanskrit dhyana , meaning ‘meditation’. 1
