ABSTRACT

As the opening quotes indicate, this chapter is about assessment. Much progress has been made in recent years concerning our understanding of assessment and (crucially) what it is for. It is vitally important to realise from the start that assessment does not simply mean tests and examinations, important though these are. That is, the world of assessment goes far beyond the summative ritual of the education game, when pupils are given the final stamp of approval (or not) to indicate that they have satisfactorily completed the course (or not).
