ABSTRACT
Within the UK OU courses have traditionally been broken down into units, and thereafter into sections of units or study sessions, with an extra layer often being added in the form of blocks of units, and these are the terms that I will use in talking about the design of courses. Other terms may be used to describe the various components, but the features that might be built into the design of courses remain the same regardless of the terminology used.
