ABSTRACT

I imagine everyone has had some life experience that creates the reaction, ‘I can't cope with this’. What this means when one has no alternative but to deal with the experience probably has very individual significance to each one of us. It may be slumping into a chair with the bank manager's letter in your hand, or getting on the phone immediately to your sister with the news that mother has just died, or going to the pub instead of back home to the wife after you've just been given the sack. These are things you do .. . but what does it feel like? It can be almost impossible to capture in words, and perhaps the closer to the extreme, the less possible it is to express articulately - expletives, tears and physical actions have to substitute.
