Introduction The 1978 annual conference of the History of Education Society was devoted to the subject 'Post-War Curriculum Development: an Historical Appraisal',1 the third annual conference sponsored by the Society in this field. The first, in 1971, had considered 'The Changing Curriculum', the second, in 1975, 'The School Curriculum'.2 In 1974 a group was formed to explore 'The History of the Curriculum'. It still flourishes.
