ABSTRACT

In order to understand how people assimilate the notion of deities, a sketch of some recent work on how we acquire our knowledge of the world may be helpful. This will involve a brief excursion into a fast-growing area of psychology where the concern is with how the acquisition of knowledge differs between domains (e.g. the physical and biological domains), with language subsequently playing an important role in their integration. The relevance of this work to the development of religious beliefs will become apparent later.
