ABSTRACT

This chapter defines and describes ADHD and outlines approaches to its identification and assessment. The prevalence of ADHD is considered and factors associated with ADHD are examined in terms of genetic, physiological, psychological and environmental influences and their possible interaction. Interventions with pupils with ADHD are discussed beginning with general approaches that are also used with pupils having BESD. Next, approaches that are more specific to pupils with ADHD are examined under the related headings of: the classroom environment and classroom management; behaviour and communication; teaching and learning approaches; and skills teaching. Medication and diet are also considered. Finally, by way of summary, the chapter outlines strategies used in a particular LEA.
