In this second volume I have put together a series of papers written by members of the University of London Institute of Education Sociological Research Unit. Six of these papers are appearing in print for the first time. It is also unlikely that these papers will appear in future monographs in the form they take in this volume. In essence the papers represent work in progress where particular ideas were tested and coding procedures worked out which, we thought, would orientate us in future analyses. The papers cover a time period from 1966 to 1971, and involve nine members of the Sociological Research Unit. Although W.Brandis is not represented by a specific paper, he has played a major part in advising on methodological problems involved in both the collection and analysis of the data.
