ABSTRACT

The Family is an international Christian fundamentalist new religious movement (NRM) and subculture that is communal in its social organization, evangelical in its aims, and is preparing for the imminent Return of Jesus. It was one of the largest and most successful NRMs to emerge out of the Jesus Movement in the late 1960s, and established missions in over one hundred countries. Although around 38,000 people have joined and left the movement, in 1999 there were around ten thousand members worldwide, and two-thirds of these were of the second generation.
