ABSTRACT
The term “holocaust” is Greek meaning a “consuming fiery sacrifice,” and it appears in the Bible in 1 Samuel 7-9, signifying a “burnt offering to the Lord.” It is now used to encompass the process leading up to and including the systematic killing of the Jews of Europe, generally dated to coincide with the Nazi seizure of power in 1933 to its fall in 1945. Some scholars prefer the Hebrew word “sho’ah,” meaning “catastrophe,” as it better reflects the Jewish experience, which certainly was not as willing sacrificial victims to any Aryan deity. From the standpoint of millennial studies, the Holocaust or Sho’ah represents the single greatest loss of life resulting, at least in part, to the messianic and apocalyptic world views of a millennial movement. It is especially significant because the combination of millennialism, messianism, and apocalypticism, along with the sanctioned use of mass violence to achieve its goals, led directly and indirectly to the deaths of some forty million people, with six million Jews singled out as the chosen enemy who had to be exterminated in order to achieve the millennial Reich (empire). Regarding the Endlösung (final solution), Lucy Dawidowicz perceptively noted that “‘Final’ reverberates with apocalyptic promise, bespeaking the Last Judgement, the End of Days, the last destruction before salvation, Armageddon.
