ABSTRACT

The millennial myth is the story of the final days of human history when God destroys the evil in the world, brings salvation for his people, and institutes a “new heaven and a new earth” in the prophesied Millennium. The myth is a powerful and flexible worldview that adapts easily, though unevenly, to changing social and cultural conditions. Arising during periods of rapid change in a society, often coinciding with the end of an age or era, the millennial myth serves as a model for current events and human history and acts as a metaphor for the way of the world. The millennial myth explains the “big picture” of human history and destiny, and it exists on a transcendental plane, where a kind of superconciousness with absolute and sacred values guides human behavior and directs human history.
