ABSTRACT

A mystic is a person who claims an immediate experience of the divine, and mysticism embraces that realm of human experience of the transcendent that is beyond religious dogma, ritual, and law. Apocalypse as a textual genre typically represents supernatural visions that have occurred to the mystic. Many religious millennialist movements include such ecstatic components, either as the foundation for the movement or the reward of the elect. Mystical visions have often initiated millennialist communities under the leadership of a charismatic or prophetic figure; they have also been appraised as signs of election or of the imminent endtimes.
