ABSTRACT
Feminist research can have a pessimistic cast. In charting and uncovering constructions of gender, it invariably displays the way in which the masculine is construed as the norm and the feminine as lesser, the other and absent. This work is no different in that respect…. But as both Tong (1994) and Wajcman (1991) argue, feminism is a political project and the best research is where action proceeds from description. Taking that on board for the present project involves not just using feminist approaches to criticize, but also the more difficult task of thinking through the ways in which AI research could be informed by feminist theory, and I make some suggestions below as to the form such research might take.
