ABSTRACT

What of the vulgar prejudice, ‘Freud makes sex the basis of everything’? All apparently comes from the sexual; affection, for example, is represented as ‘aim-inhibited’ love. Why is Eros insisted on? Freud means to refer to body-pleasure when he uses the word ‘libido’. Genital love, a narrower category, is constructed out of many possibilities in bodily pleasure. Freud is a reluctant psychologist—in an insistent sense we remain bodies on the theory; or more accurately, the body is the condition of the mind. Happiness and suffering, pleasure and pain, are firstly feelings for Freud, and feeling belongs to the body.
