To demonstrate the affinities between psychoanalysis and their own concerns, many contemporary writers refer to certain totemic moments in the theory, such as the essay on the uncanny or the death drive, or point to fetish objects like the dream or the mystic writing pad. But it is also possible to explore conceptual schemes in Freudian theory that foreshadow contemporary philosophies; to ask, is there a psychoanalysis of theory? 1
