ABSTRACT

The fall of the Third Reich was followed by the banning of any attempt to revive national socialism in Germany. Despite this prohibition, it reemerged in the country which had given it birth. It re-emerged too in other countries, not least the United States. But it is not always clear whether particular post-war groupings are to be described as national socialist, and even when exactly national socialism re-emerged in America is a matter of argument. As we will see, there is good reason to define certain groups in terms that they themselves would not use. But to justify a characterization of national socialism as extending beyond those groups that expressly define themselves as such, we need to discuss what we might mean by national socialism.
