ABSTRACT

The central concerns of this chapter are the physiological determinants of cycling. Through a review of current scientific knowledge and the application of that knowledge to the sport of cycling, one might optimize the achievement of human potential within the sport. As our knowledge of cycling physiology grows it is essential that there is continued open communication between the scientist and practitioner. This chapter represents an attempt to transcend the traditional boundaries between the exercise scientist, the coach and his cyclist. Each section represents an inquiry unique to the sport of cycling. The aim is to present the reader with a valid perspective within which to study the sport of cycling.
