ABSTRACT

With the exception of a French symposium (Prevot and Auvinet, 1981), relatively few physiologists have studied the demands of sailing. The statement of Durnin and Passmore (1967) still seems true:

We know of no-one who has measured the energy cost of any of the many different activities in which a yachtsman is employed… Most yachtsmen probably find that their recreation provides them with exercise of a light grade, but with occasional periods of moderate or heavy exercise.
