ABSTRACT

Captain, DSO**, DSC. He was one of the small band of regular RN officers who provided the initial leadership and example for Coastal Forces, and one of the most decorated officers to have served in them. It was his force of MTBs which boldly but unsuccessfully attacked the German Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen in their ‘Channel dash’ from Brest to Germany in 1942 (see CILIAX).
