ABSTRACT

During his early career he served in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean, 1826-31. He studied at the Norfolk Naval School, 1831-32. Following a variety of assignments ashore and at sea, he served in the Mexican-American War, 1846-48. During that war he commanded the brig USS Somers, 10, which was lost in a storm only months after his taking command. He was assigned to the office of the Instructor of Provisions and Clothing, 1848-49. During subsequent assignments he advanced to Commander in September 1855.
