ABSTRACT
Admiral. He was the senior US naval commander in the Pacific during critical Cold War periods. In July 1958 he became C-in-C US Forces in the Pacific and Far East, and US Military Advisor to the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. During that year his naval forces were a critical deterrent during the Quemoy-Matsu crises in the Formosa Strait.
