ABSTRACT

All his lieutenant’s service was in a succession of ships under Sir Edward HAWKE, at the start of the Seven Years’ War. Hawke promoted him to Commander, and while in command of the Syren, 20, he captured a French 26-gun privateer, which earned him promotion to Captain. And while commanding the Melampe, 36, he took the French Danaë, 40, in 1759. He remained a frigate captain to the end of the war in 1763, being successful in taking prizes and destroying privateers in the Biscay region.
