ABSTRACT
The reader may consider that this paper is out of place in a book concerned with language and socialization. I have included it for a number of reasons. It is an attempt to understand the inter-relationships between symbolic orders, form of social organization and the shaping of experience in terms of codes; here in terms of educational knowledge codes. It is concerned with the problems of change and, like the earlier work, draws on Durkheim explicitly and Marx and Mead implicitly. From another point of view, it considers different forms of the institutionalizing of elaborated codes and their consequences.
