ABSTRACT
In the first chapter we explored the concept of patterns in the landscape and the way they are intimately connected to the processes that created them. The discussions were primarily concerned with applying objectivity to the description of patterns, a task that will be explored more deeply in Chapters Five to Seven. This is necessary to provide a firm base to explore the ways that we perceive and respond to these patterns in an aesthetic sense, and how this might help us create new patterns by design. Thus, both pattern analysis and design necessitate an understanding of how human perception works, how it influences our opinions and feelings, and therefore, how we understand and relate to the patterns and processes explored in this book.
