ABSTRACT

This unit draws attention to issues which have particular relevance to you when you are just starting to take responsibility for whole lessons.

Recall the iceberg image of a teacher’s work from Unit 1.1. The delivery of the lesson in the classroom represents the tip of the iceberg, while the bulk of the teacher’s work for a lesson – routines, preparation, subject knowledge, professional knowledge and judgement, previous lesson evaluations – is hidden. This unit focuses on particular aspects of planning and teaching which initially cause many student teachers problems.
