ABSTRACT

The primary aim of a teacher’s work is, fairly obviously, that pupils should learn how, what, whether and so on in relation to the subject of study; teaching is therefore a means to an end, not an end in itself. However, the interaction between the activities of teaching and the outcomes of learning is critical. In order to develop presentation and communication techniques that facilitate effective learning a teacher must have some notions of how pupils learn. Course lectures and school experience add to and refine the ideas you already have about learning and reveal the very great differences in how individuals learn. Psychological research is concerned with this individuality of cognition – knowing, understanding, remembering and problem solving. Research reveals information about human behaviour, motivation, achievement, personality and self-esteem, all of which impact on the activity of learning.
