ABSTRACT
Assessment covers all those activities which are undertaken by teachers and others to measure the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Assessment includes not only setting and marking pupils’ work, tests and examinations but also the recording and reporting of the results. It is important to develop a clear understanding of current mechanisms for assessing, reporting and recording pupils’ work and progress in your subject, and also an understanding of the various purposes which assessment serves in the educational process and some of the tensions which arise from these differing purposes.
