ABSTRACT

The success of any school depends on its staff. Although you have successfully met the requirements to qualify as a teacher at the end of your initial teacher education (ITE) course, you still have a lot to learn about teaching to increase your effectiveness. Professional accountability includes a commitment to keeping abreast of changes in education, in order to develop your knowledge and teaching skills. Continuing professional development (CPD) helps you continue to learn and develop professionally throughout your career. The first part of your CPD is your induction. Induction includes immediate induction into the post and ongoing induction throughout the first year. After induction, early professional development (EPD, in the second and third years of teaching), then CPD continues throughout your career. This sequence of development can be shown as follows:

ITE ————— CPD ————— EPD/CPD induction

You must take responsibility for your own professional development, supported by school managers. If you are teaching in England your Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) is the beginning of active planning for your future career, identifying appropriate areas for development and activities and/or experiences appropriate to achieve these.
