ABSTRACT
Vocabulary development is one aspect of language acquisition that continues throughout our lives. For example, nervine is probably a word you have never encountered before. But if you look in the Oxford English Dictionary, you will find that it can mean either soothing or a nerve tonic. Of course, little children cannot take the easy way out and grab a dictionary. And yet, they add thousands of words to their vocabularies in the first five years of life.
