316Umpire (sports and leisure) In sports, the official officer on the playing court or field who decides if a ball is good (i.e., can be played) or not and if the actions of the players are FOUL12 or not. He or she wears distinctive dark clothing to be distinguished from the players. In BASKETBALL, this official wears black pants and a shirt with black and white vertical stripes. Usually, there are one or two umpires officiating a basketball game. In BASEBALL, this official wears a black baseball cap, black pants and a black jacket worn over a light blue shirt. Most MAJOR LEAGUE games have four umpires, one each at FIRST BASE, SECOND BASE, THIRD BASE and HOME PLATE.
