ABSTRACT

After the tumultuous preceding 2 years the Anglo-Irish relationship was placed on a firmer, institutionalised footing as a result of the inter and intra-governmental negotiations in the run up to the Anglo-Irish Agreement (AIA) of November 1985. This period witnessed a re-examination and articulation of the Republic's view of Northern Ireland in the New Ireland Forum (NIF), which in turn caused a re-evaluation and restatement by Unionists of their objectives in Northern Ireland with the UUP's The Way Forward and the DUP's Ulster: The Future Assured. The British Government also came under pressure from the Irish Government, the United States and European Parliament to engage in a review of its own Northern Ireland policy.
