ABSTRACT

jargon A word or phrase associated with a subject field which is clear to the experts using it, but not to outsiders. Jargon shares with other special-language varieties like SLANG an in-group orientation which outsiders often criticise. Jargon dictionaries attempt to explain specialised usage for the benefit of the non-initiated, sometimes in pseudo-humorous and/ or critical fashion, while technical or TERMINOLOGICAL DICTIONARIES have less of a bridge-building function. HARD WORD, LANGUAGE FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES, TECHNICAL LANGUAGE.
